Garden 100v Audio System

This is not really homelab related but I thought it was nerdy enough to write a blog post about it. During the current (as of writing) lockdown in the UK my family has been revamping our long neglected garden. its been years since we had a nice garden so we have been making slow progress towards having the garden we want.

Part of that is an audio setup for music. I had the idea when I saw my mum had moved the smart speaker in the kitchen to being right by the window so she could listen to music and do the gardening but that was a clunky and risky solution (for the poor speaker)

People who follow this blog and my youtube/reddit posts might already know that for the past few years I have been running a DL380 G7 at home which I named Danny. the server itself is awesome but when a deal for a DL380e Gen8 came up I could not resist

I have recently been upgrading my home CCTV from analogue to IP using Hikvision cameras. I have found them to be excellent quality for the price and has made an otherwise expensive upgrade fairly cheap over time. but I am always looking for a bargain and found a DS-2DE4220IW-D PTZ dome for a mere £65 on ebay and had to have it even if I could not get it working as these things are nearly £300 new.

ocserv VPN server installation on CentOS 7

I have always had a VPN of some kind at my homelab. Starting with the built-in Sophos VPN when I used Sophos XG. I moved to a Cisco VPN on an 1841 router shortly after just for fun but finally settled on a Windows Server RRAS solution as I had Server 2016 Datacentre and used AD.

But this was plagued with issues and was a pain to manage. the only good part is it was a seamless connection. no masquerading for NAT. it took a lot of system resources like RAM and L2TP over IPsec required 2 ports to be opened.

Needless to say, it worked well but caused issues outside of Windows/Android environment as I found when I got an iPhone.

Moving to Hyper-V

For those of you who have been keeping up to date with my posts on /r/homelab you will know I recently posted an updated diagram and in it dropped the news I had migrated Danny my Big DL380 G7 server from oVirt/KVM to Hyper-V with Windows Server 2016 Datacentre and in this post I am going to explain why exactly.

Lets start with when I first got Danny. At the time I had used 3 Hypervisors. Hyper-V, ESXI and XenServer and Hyper-V never appealed to me to be honest as it was a lot of work in server 2012 R2 and ESXI was too limited on the free plan so I put XenServer on it to match my other VM host. shortly after that Citrix decided to nerf the XenServer free edition so seeing as the DL380 at the time had very few VM's hosted I thought what the heck and tried to find an alternative that worked for me.

Home Cisco WIFI install with vWLC

So if you follow my on the /r/homelab subreddit you might have seen my post about my network diagram. and if you saw that the is a good chance you saw that I was rocking a single Cisco 1131 AP which I got many complaints about (with good reason). What I did not show is the extra Cisco 1231 which I had just finished configuring and was ready to install in my shed to get much needed WIFI to our garden which not only lacked WIFI but also 3G/4G making it impossible to browse reddit in the great outdoors and we cant have that.
